Know Your Stones

In 2002, the UN adopted a system to end the practice of diamond trading for dubious means. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme outlines the regulations and requirements countries must follow to make sure a diamond is mined and shipped in a humane, legitimate way. Diamonds that meet these regulations are shipped with a Kimberley Process certificate. When you buy a diamond, the jeweler should be able to provide this certificate -- if they can't, you should be wary of the stone's origin.

Check for Certification

Any well-established, reputable jeweler should be able to tell you about a diamond's history and guarantee that it's conflict-free. How do you know a jeweler is telling the truth? Ask to see the diamond's System of Warranties statement, and know what these certificates look like before you shop -- you can see examples at DiamondFacts.org.

Course Fee
The course fee is US$1,400.00. South African citizens pay R6,900.00 inclusive.

To ensure personal attention, each course is limited to a maximum of ten students.

General Course Objectives
1. To prepare the student to become proficient in every technique involved in the manufacture and grading of diamonds.
2. To teach the student how to sort and buy diamonds both in the rough and cut state and how colour, imperfection and shape affect prices.
Course Outline

Students will learn:
1. the correct use of a loupe.
2. the different varieties of diamond crystals and polycrystalline aggregates in diamonds using real diamonds as well as wooden and plastic models.
3. the identification of imitation (fake) diamonds.
4. structural defects and the internal structure of diamond crystals including marks, inclusions, naart, maccles and stress.
5. optical, mechanical, electrical, thermal and chemical properties of diamond crystals.
6. the study of impurity centres in rough diamond crystals, their cause and effect.
7. how to select diamonds for fancy shapes, determining their ultimate form whilst in the rough stage.
8. how to determine colour in diamonds, both natural and artificial, and its effect on buying and selling.
9. how to select and sort rough diamonds for purity, colour, size, shape and any unusual qualities.
10. how to determine whether a whole rough diamond is to be cleaved, sawed or retained as is.
11. classification of rough gems and industrial diamonds.
12. use of a polariscope when analyzing stress and strain within the internal molecular structure of rough diamonds.
13. sketching of rough diamonds pinpointing impurities within the diamond.
14. use of a Moe gauge to estimate weight recovery as well as estimating weight recovery percentages.
15. pricing of rough diamonds using the Rapaport Polished Diamond Price List and the ADTEC Rough Diamond Guideline Price List.
Diploma
There will be a practical exam on completion of this course, and the student will receive a diploma stating that they have successfully completed the Rough Diamond Evaluation and Grading Course at the Diamond Education College.
Applications
1. Applications must be made well in advance because of the limited number of students that can be accommodated at any specific intake.
2. Admission is solely at the schools discretion.
3. Full fee must be paid before commencement of the course.
4. Fees are not refundable. Postponing of the course is possible only with two weeks advance notice.
Equipment
All equipment for use during the course will be provided and remain the property of the Diamond Education College.
Accommodation and Transportation
Very limited accommodation is available for students, and includes transportation to and from the SA Diamond Centre. Students may arrange their own transport and accommodation.
Discipline
Students will be subject to the disciplinary code of the Diamond Education College. Any student who is in breach of its code will be liable to suspension or expulsion without refund of fees paid.
Language
The course is presented in English or Afrikaans. Students must be able to understand and converse in these languages. Interpreters for Dutch, Flemish, Polish, Czech and Russian are available.

This ring was worn by my Ex-Fiance for about 13 months. It is absolutely gorgeous. I have all the official paperwork from the GIA, and will send as many pics as you would like. The only nicks are on the bottom of the platinum ring where the ring would hit a desk (she had a desk job). They are very small and since on the bottom not that obvious. The ring size is 4.5. The total weight of the diamonds are 2.13. The center radiant diamond is 1.34 with two .25 carat princess cut diamonds to each side (color and clarity are even better than main stone). Then there are a total of 28 full cut diamonds wrapped or (paved) around the ring. There are a total of 31 diamonds. If you need to see the paperwork on it I will fax or mail it to you. Doing Your Own Stone Settings

Stone setting in general is much more difficult than many might suspect. There are short courses in various sorts of jewelry work but those provide only a basic starting place and years of experience needed to become truly proficient in many areas. Fortunately, if a person devotes time to stone setting and does enough of one style of setting to become comfortable with it, moving on to similar styles is not nearly as difficult as those "first trials".

As you likely know, stone setting is done in many different styles. Within those styles, one jeweler may use slightly different methods than would another jeweler doing the exact same job. There is room to experiment with methods but only after you have set a few stones and are pleased with the results. Once you have a feel for the metal and the gems, then you know enough not to totally mess-up by trying a slightly different method.

Stone Setting Styles. I will mention a few styles and recommend what I believe is the best place to begin.The prong settings using faceted stones. This is the best place to begin. Start with a round stone, perhaps 4mm to 7mm in diameter. Smaller stones are more difficult until you learn the "give and take" of the metal, while larger stones present other problems. Start with normal prongs, generally four or six to the setting.

There are lots of prong settings with fancy formed and decorated prongs but those are not the best with which to begin learning. I don't care if the prong settings are part of a pendant, ring or earrings. The idea is fairly plain and basic prong settings regardless of the jewelry type.

The Bezel Settings, is use a narrow area of metal around the girdle or waist of the stone to secure the stone in the setting. The most basic form is seen in typical southwestern turquoise jewelry, essentially a band of silver wrapped around the stone and pressed down toward the stone from the top.

The more dramatic and much more difficult bezel is "flush set", where a gemstone is set directly into the surface of metal such as on a ring band and the metal is burnished or hammered to the stone then finished for smoothness. This last technique is quite difficult for a beginner and is best left until you feel ready for it and have the equipment to do the job.

Channel Settings. You have seen these settings in which rows of stones are set into a "groove" or channel of metal. This is also a difficult job and should not be attempted to start. To try a channel setting without lots of previous metal and seat cutting experience will lead to frustration and disappointment. Look at channel set stones at a jewelry store.

Inexpensive jewelry is a "fake job" and the stones are in a channel but held in place with little burs of metal pushed over opposite sides of the stone. Stones fall out of these settings! A real channel set has the metal along the channel pushed down onto the stones, all along the channel. You need to learn to bezel set before doing channel settings since some similar techniques are used.

Bead Set or Pave Setting. This setting is done with hand tools in the final stages, forming metal over one stone at a time and sometimes two at a time using "graver" tools. This is advanced technique. A setting style with a similar look uses "needle point" prongs formed to start with in the metal. We can talk about that sometime down the road.

Fancy Shaped Stones. Even when using prong settings, fancy shaped stones need added techniques. Essentially the same methods are used to cut seats and tighten prongs for emerald cuts as for round and oval stones. Marquise and pear shapes have a pointed end requiring a different seat cutting method to hold the pointed end securely without breaking the stone! The problem with emerald cuts is getting the stone level and straight and secure enough that the stone will not "turn" in the prongs.

The problem with stones with pointed ends or corners is cutting the seat and tightening without damage to the stone. Such fancy shape are not to be feared but understood to be more difficult, requiring practiced hand control before attempting.

Settings. I recommend starting with simple prong settings, generally found in four and six prong versions. Note, jewelers often use the words settings, heads, crowns and mountings to mean the same thing.

Stone Shapes. I recommend round faceted stones in sizes from perhaps 4mm to 7mm. You may try ovals stone, too, but do a few rounds first. With ovals, over tightening any prong can make the stone go sideways a bit in the prongs.

Stone Kinds. CZ's are good to start as are man-made birthstones. Most of the birthstones are synthetic sapphire (corundum) and are quite hard. The value of these stones is, they are pretty when set and are not expensive. The cuts are fairly uniform, too, compared to less expensive natural stones. Still, you need to practice on some stones which are not tough as the birthstones. For this, choose perhaps some inexpensive, meaning almost colorless, amethysts and inexpensive garnets.

These will not be the most beautiful gems but are wonderful for practice and can look pretty in earrings and pendants. You will likely discover the girdle or waist of inexpensive natural gems may be varied in thickness and the angles of the facets on the pavilion or bottom of the stone may vary. The idea is to get the stone level in the mounting so it looks level to the eye.

For the work to be done just like it should, stone seats need to be cut into the prongs to match the gemstone on hand. I suggest trying something in sterling silver. The metal is easy to bend and work. In fact, sterling is soft enough to "over bend" without due care. Gold is somewhat more springy and takes more effort to properly set than silver. However, gold is more forgiving than silver and certainly takes a better finish in the final steps. I suggest a sterling pendant, facet set stone in prongs. That is a good starting place.

Please, keep in mind the main idea is to have a finished piece that does look good to the eye! The stone should be safe and secure in the setting but that is not "seen". What is seen is the finished jewelry. That is the impression both to you and to anyone who happens to see it. Set the stone at a pleasing depth in the prongs, stone set level, finish off the prongs so all is uniform and neatly done. It will take some time to get use to this kind of think, but when you do get use to this kind of thing you will have no problem fixing your jewelery, your families, maybe even some of your friends jewelery.

Diamond and Graphite

Diamond is composed of the single element carbon, and it is the arrangement of the C atoms in the lattice that give diamond its amazing properties. Compare the structure of diamond and graphite, both composed of just carbon. In diamond we have the hardest known material, in graphite we have one of the softest, simply by rearranging the way the atoms are bonded together.

The relationship between diamond and graphite is a thermodynamic and kinetic one, as can be seen in the phase diagram for carbon. At normal temperatures and pressures, graphite is only a few eV more stable than diamond, and the fact that diamond exists at all is due to the very large activation barrier for conversion between the two. There is no easy mechanism to convert between the two and so interconversion requires almost as much energy as destroying the entire lattice and rebuilding it. Once diamond is formed, therefore, it cannot reconvert back to graphite because the barrier is too high. So diamond is said to be metastable, since it is kinetically stable, not thermodynamically stable. Diamond is created deep underground under conditions of extreme pressure and temperature. Under these conditions diamond is actually the more stable of the two forms of carbon, and so over a period of millions of years carbonaceous deposits slowly crystallise into single crystal diamond gemstones.

Natural diamonds

Natural diamonds are classified by the type and level of impurities found within them.

Type Ia diamond - Most natural diamonds are of this type, which contain up to 0.3% nitrogen.
Type Ib diamond - Very rare (~0.1%) in nature, but almost all synthetic (industrial) diamonds are of this type. They contain nitrogen at concentrations of up to 500 ppm.
Type IIa diamond - Very rare in nature, these diamonds contain so little nitrogen that it can't be easily detected by the usual IR or UV absorption measurements.
Type IIb diamond - Extremely rare in nature. These have such a low concentration of nitrogen (even lower than type IIa) that the crystal is a p-type semiconductor (due to uncompensated B acceptor impurities).

Synthetic Industrial Diamond

These have been made since the early 1950's, by a process called High Pressure High Temperature synthesis (HPHT). This is an attempt to mimic the conditions under which natural diamond forms deep in the earth. Graphite is put into a huge hydraulic press at high temperatures and pressures, and with the addition of a metallic catalyst, converts to diamond over a period of a few hours. The diamond crystals that are produced by this method are typically a few mm in size, which are too flawed for use as gemstones, but are extremely useful as hard-wearing edges on cutting tools and drill-bits.

Thin Film Diamond

This is a relatively recent development (past 10 years or so), which allows thin films (µm to mm) of polycrystalline diamond to be deposited onto a range of materials, using a technique called Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). This is creating a great deal of excitement in the academic community, since for the first time we have access to all the superlative properties of diamond in a form that is useful for engineering applications. We can imagine hard-wearing diamond coatings on machine parts, diamond windows, diamond electronics, diamond displays, diamond fibre reinforcements, and a whole host of other applications. Girl, 6, finds woman's $9,000 diamond ring

BRYANT, Ark. — A 6-year-old girl who found what she thought was a fake diamond ring in a Wal-Mart parking lot has helped reunite a Benton newlywed with her missing $9,000 engagement ring.

Haley Reep Wagnon lost her 1.26-carat diamond ring at a Bryant Wal-Mart on July 8. She reported it missing, and Bryant police reviewed Wal-Mart's surveillance videos and saw that a child picked up the ring.

"I saw a little girl pick up the ring in the parking lot, but I don't think the girl was trying to steal the ring and I don't think the family with her was even aware," Bryant police Detective Todd Crowson said. "She probably didn't even know that it is a real ring."

Police saw the family's vehicle, and were able to determine which Saline County dealership sold it to them. From there, they were able to find out who the truck was registered to — Michael Wheaton of Bryant.

"I got a call about a young lady losing a ring and a little girl picking it up and I said, 'OK, you've got my attention,'" Wheaton said. "I came down to the station and when he showed me the picture, I said, 'That's my brother from Chicago and his kids.'"

Girl thought it was fake
Wheaton determined that his 12-year-old daughter, Destiny, had the ring after her 6-year-old cousin gave it to her. Destiny said the ring, which she thought was fake, was in the back of Wheaton's truck.

"I couldn't believe it, especially when I saw the size of the diamond," Wheaton said. "It had been in my truck for three days. If Detective (Crowson) wouldn't have called me, who knows what would have happened to it. It could have ended up in my daughter's dresser or something."

Wagnon — who was married June 7 — got her ring back in time for the weekend.

"I can't believe I got it back," Wagnon said. "I am just so happy. I just don't know what else to say. This just makes my day."

The colours of white diamonds are graded on a scale using the letters of the alphabet from D to Z. The letters essentially correspond to the level of colour in the diamond, the rarest being in the ‘colourless’ range. The closer up the alphabet towards D, the less colour there is in the diamond. The closer along the scale you get towards Z, the more yellow is in the diamond.

Colourless Diamonds

The rarest and most expensive diamonds are those in the range D-F which are colourless, followed by G-H which are white and then I-J which are slightly tinted. It can be difficult to tell the difference between a diamond in the colourless range and the near colourless range using the naked eye. This is particularly true after the diamond has been set within the ring itself.

Those diamonds further down the scale, particularly within the light yellow and yellow ranges, do have a noticeable yellow colour to them, even to the naked and untrained eye. We do not offer these types of diamonds on this website.

As with all of the grades associated with diamonds, the colour can have a dramatic effect on the price of the stone. With colour, this is predominantly due to the rarity of colourless diamonds compared with those lower down in the scale.

Diamond Fluorescence

Another characteristic that does not affect the colour grade of a diamond but is worth keeping in mind is fluorescence. When choosing a diamond, you should always look for a fluorescence of either none or faint. Medium, Strong and Very Strong fluorescence can make some diamonds appear to have a slightly blue or milky white tint in strong sunlight or under an ultraviolet light.

Natural fancy coloured diamonds are very rare and expensive. Blue is one of the rarest and most desirable colours. The Hope diamond, which we have viewed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., is the most famous blue diamond in the world, and the largest at 45.52 carats. The attempted Millennium Dome Diamond Robbery was an attempt to steal 12 large diamonds valued at a total of £200 million, an average of over £16 million each. Eleven out of the twelve diamonds were fancy coloured blue diamonds! The twelfth (non-blue) diamond weighed 203 carats.

Is It Natural?

Natural blue diamonds are so rare that most jewellers have never seen one, and will never own one. In recent years, methods of producing intensely coloured diamonds, including fancy blue, have been developed. We believe that the process probably recreates the conditions which existed millions of years ago to produce natural fancy coloured stones. The treatment can only work with a small minority of diamonds, and involves irradiating them causing the colour change, usually followed by heat treatment to stabilise the colour. The blue diamonds we currently have available are enhanced or treated. If this fact puts you off owning one, then please stop to consider that every diamond has been enhanced by facetting, and most coloured gemstones are heat treated to enhance their colour. We will add a page devoted to gemstone treatments when we have more time.

How Rare?

In our first twenty years of designing diamond rings, we had only owned 5 coloured diamonds, four of which were certificated as natural. Now that treated stones are available, we intend to make full use of their inherent beauty in our rings. Even enhance (treated) blue diamonds are not easy to find, so our stock selection will never be very extensive. Natural blue diamonds remain so rare, that we don't bother trying to find any! Any comments we make about blue diamonds will relate to treated ones unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.

How Expensive?

Quality for quality, fancy blue diamonds are more expensive than ordinary near-colourless ones. The processing adds to the costs, so it is generally only worth treating diamonds of high clarity. The diamonds selected for treatment usually start off a one of the less desirable colours such as brown or yellow. There is no certainty about the final colour that any particular stone will be after treatment.

What About Sapphires?

Why bother to get so excited about blue diamonds, when we could use sapphires instead? The very best sapphires are quite expensive, and they still do not have the sparkle that blue diamonds possess. In addition even though sapphires are very hard and durable, diamonds are many times harder and even more durable.

Blue Diamond.

The Blue Diamonds were a Dutch 1960s doo-wop duo best known for their chart topping single Ramona. Indo (Dutch-Indonesian) brothers Ruud de Wolff (born May 12, 1941, died Dec 2000) and Riem de Wolff (born April 15, 1943) founded the group shortly after immigrating to the Netherlands in 1949. They were born in Batavia (now Jakarta) , Indonesia.

Called the 'Dutch Everly Brothers', The Blue Diamonds covered many Everly Brothers songs, but became famous in 1960 with their version of 'Ramona,' a song originally written for the 1928 movie 'Ramona.' The song was written for promotional appearances with Dolores Del Rio (star of the film) but not featured in the film itself. The Blue Diamonds up-tempo version of it reached the American Billboard Hot 100: #72.

Although their last hit was in 1971, they continued to perform together up until Ruud died at the end of year 2000. Riem continues to perform and release albums.

The right-sized Chive features a 1 15/16-inch blade of premium high-carbon 420 stainless steel and measures just 2 7/8-inches closed. It weighs 1.9 ounces.
